But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. – James 1:22
What's the point of having to understand something if you won't act upon it? Was the end goal for you just to listen? I hope not. I mean listening and understanding are essential, but it's not the end goal. Listening and understanding are intended to help you actively make better decisions. Of course, we can't change the world without understanding it. However, let us not think that understanding the world will itself produce change, nor to believe that acquiring understanding is the end goal, while still leaving us with a world we can understand that is still not changed. My friend, we would be wise to remember that “Information Is Not Transformation.” Think what Jesus said “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock (Matthew 7:24). Its Information Acted upon that leads to Transformation.
Is Knowledge Power?
Do you remember that sign that said, "Knowledge is Power!?"
It was a very popular saying as I was growing up. But now that I look back on that statement, I feel like something is missing from it. The whole world has come a long way with having access to a lot of knowledge, but how much of this power has changed anything? No doubt knowledge has changed many things and has helped progress society. But I think it was the knowledge that was acted upon, that people valued, and had a vision of what it could do that has changed things. Not knowledge itself. "The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out" (Proverbs 18:15).
"For merely listening to the law doesn't make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight" (Romans 2:13)
Miles Munroe once used an analogy of wanting to die empty than to die full. What he meant was that He did not want to die with His ideas or dreams. He wanted to die knowing that He at the very least expressed them and tried to make them come true. How many inventions, businesses, books, movies, and ideas died with people having never been shown or known? Maybe what has made some people the first at anything, was not because they were the first to think of it, but the first to act upon what they learned. So what are you going to do? Are you going to merely acquire knowledge and store it up for a book you will never write? My hope is that write down what you have learned and more importantly for you to act upon it. It’s the only way you will change the world.
Remember, it is the knowledge that was acted upon, not knowledge itself that changes the world.
